Common Questions
MCI bus FAQs
The questions our team hears most about buying a used MCI, answered in full.
Who is Motor Coach Industries (MCI)?
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is a North American motorcoach manufacturer that delivered its first coach in 1933 and is now owned by NFI Group, the parent of New Flyer. MCI was founded in Winnipeg, Manitoba, by Harry Zoltok and has US headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois. MCI coaches serve charter, tour, commuter and intercity operators across the US and Canada, and many retired MCI coaches become motorhome conversions.
How does MCI compare with Prevost?
MCI and Prevost are the two leading North American motorcoach brands, and both build 45-foot coaches for charter, tour and commuter work. MCI is owned by NFI Group and builds in Manitoba and North Dakota, while Prevost is owned by the Volvo Group and builds in Quebec. Prevost has traditionally positioned its H3-45 and X3-45 at the premium end, while the MCI J4500 has been a high-volume charter coach.
Where can you get MCI parts and service?
MCI parts are sold through NFI Parts, the combined parts business for MCI and New Flyer, and service comes from MCI's company-owned sales and service centers. These centers operate across North America. MCI says its parts operation carries the industry's largest inventory of MCI and other coach parts. In 2025 MCI opened a full-service center in Torrance, California, offering body and paint work, refurbishment, fire restoration and general repairs.
What types of coaches does MCI make?
MCI's current lineup centers on the J-Series and D-Series coaches. The 45-foot J4500 and 35-foot J3500 serve charter and tour operators, the D45 CRT LE is a low-entry commuter coach for accessible service, and MCI offers battery-electric CHARGE versions for zero-emission fleets. Earlier MCI models include the MC-5 through MC-9 and MC-12, the 102 Series, the D4000, D4500 and D4505, and the E4500.
Do you need a CDL to drive an MCI coach or MCI conversion?
You need a CDL to drive an MCI coach used as a bus, but a privately owned MCI motorhome conversion is generally exempt from the federal CDL requirement. Every MCI coach is designed for 16 or more occupants and exceeds 26,000 pounds, so passenger use requires a CDL, typically Class B with a passenger endorsement. After retitling as a motorhome, state rules apply; California requires a non-commercial Class B license for housecars over 40 feet.
