About Volvo Buses
Volvo Buses is part of the Swedish Volvo Group, which also owns Prevost. In North America, the 9700 has been sold and supported through Prevost's network since 2009, which is why many service records come from Prevost locations.
What Buyers Look for in Used Volvo Buses
Coach buyers usually compare mileage (300,000+ is common), D13 engine and emissions-system service history, I-Shift transmission records, and lift condition on ADA units. Ask whether the coach came from charter or line service, since line coaches typically log more stop-and-go hours.

Common Questions
Volvo bus FAQs
The questions our team hears most about buying a used Volvo, answered in full.
Where are Volvo buses for North America built?
Volvo coaches for the United States and Canada are built at Volvo Buses' plant in Mexico. Volvo launched the 9700 in North America in 2009, sold and supported through Prevost, which Volvo Group also owns. The Tultitlán, Mexico, plant also builds Volvo's 9800 coaches and B8R, B11R and B13R chassis for Latin America, and is set to supply 9700 coaches to Europe from late 2026.
What types of buses does Volvo make?
Volvo Buses makes highway coaches, city buses and bare bus chassis that other companies body. Its coaches include the 9700 sold in North America and the 9800 and 9800 DD double-decker built in Mexico. Volvo also supplies B-series chassis such as the B8R, B11R and B13R, and in Europe it sells electric city buses. Model names and specifications differ by market, so a non-US Volvo bus will not match US specifications.
How much does a Volvo double decker bus cost?
Volvo double decker buses are rare on the US market; a 2000 Volvo B7 double decker converted to open-top in 2012 has listed on BusesForSale.com for about $65,000. New Volvo double-deck coaches, such as the 63-passenger 9800 DD with a 500 hp D13 engine, are built in Mexico for Latin American operators and are not sold new in the US. Prices quoted for India reflect local models and taxes. These are October 2026 asking prices of priced BusesForSale.com listings; listings quoted on request are excluded.
Does Volvo make electric buses for North America?
Volvo Group builds battery-electric transit buses for Canada through Nova Bus, whose LFSe+ is built in Quebec, but it no longer sells new transit buses in the US. In June 2023, Nova Bus announced it would end US bus production, close its Plattsburgh, New York, plant and keep parts and service support for US customers. Volvo's own coach for the US and Canada, the 9700, is diesel.
Does Volvo make school buses in the US?
No, Volvo does not build school buses for the US market. Volvo's North American bus business has centered on the 9700 highway coach, sold through Prevost, plus transit buses from Volvo Group's Nova Bus. US school buses come from builders such as Blue Bird, Thomas Built Buses, IC Bus, Collins and Trans Tech. A Volvo coach can carry school groups on charter trips but is not a yellow school bus.
